Materials:

#20 cotton crochet thread - small amount
2 - 1.75 mm double point needles (or size to achieve correct gauge)
stitch markers
tapestry needle
pins for blocking
optional beads for decoration

Dimensions:

2.25" wide, 8.5" long (to end of bead)

Abbreviations:

BO - bind off
CO - cast on
k - knit
k2tog - knit two stitches together
p - purl
pm - pass marker from left needle to right needle
psso - pass slipped stitch over knitted stitch on right hand needle
RS - right side
sl - slip stitch from left to right needle (knitwise, unless otherwise noted)
ssk - slip, slip, knit (slip 2 stitches individually knitwise to the right hand needle and knit them through the back)
st - stitch
WS - wrong side
yo - yarn over

Instructions:

CO 3 sts.

Row 1 (WS): K3

Row 2 (RS): K1, [knit, purl, knit in 1 st], k1

Row 3: K5

Row 4: K2, yo, k1, yo, k2

Row 5: K2, p3, k2

Row 6: K2, yo, k3, yo, k2

Row 7: K2, p5, k2

Row 8: K2, yo, k5, yo, k2

Row 9: K2, p7, k2

Row 10: K2, yo, k7, yo, k2

Row 11: K2, p9, k2

Row 12: K2, yo, k9, yo, k2

Row 13: K2, p11, k2

Row 14: K2, yo, k11, yo, k2

Row 15: K2, p13, k2

Row 16: K2, yo, k13, yo, k2

Repeat rows 18 - 29 six more times, or until bookmark is sufficiently long.

Knit 4 rows. BO loosely.

For optional star or bead embellishment:

Cast on three stitches and begin I-cord as follows: *Do not turn work. Pushing stitches to other end of double point needle and drawing yarn around back, k3. Repeat from * until I-cord measures approximately 3".

Next row: slip 1, k2tog, psso. BO.

Attach one end of I-cord to top point of bookmark. Thread star or bead onto I-cord. Attach second end to top of bookmark. Weave in ends and block lightly. Use starch if stiffening is desired.
