Materials:

Fingering/lace weight yarn - small amount
2 - 2.25 mm double point needles (or size to achieve correct gauge)
stitch markers
tapestry needle
pins for blocking
optional beads for decoration

Gauge:

6 sts and 7 rows/in. (blocked) over lace pattern

Abbreviations:

BO - bind off
CO - cast on
k - knit
k2tog - knit two stitches together
p - purl
pm - pass marker from left needle to right needle
psso - pass slipped stitch over knitted stitch on right hand needle
RS - right side
sl - slip stitch from left to right needle (knitwise, unless otherwise noted)
ssk - slip, slip, knit (slip 2 stitches individually knitwise to the right hand needle and knit them through the back)
st - stitch
WS - wrong side
yo - yarn over

Instructions:

CO 17 sts.

Knit 5 rows (garter stitch).

Row 6: K2, place marker, purl across row to last 2 sts, place marker, k2.

Row 7: K2, pass marker (pm), (k2tog, yo) 3x, k1, (yo, ssk) 3x, pm, k2.

Row 8 (and all even numbered rows): K2, pm, purl across to last marker, pm, k2.

Row 9: K2, pm, k1, (k2tog, yo) 2x, k3, (yo, ssk) 2x, k1, pm, k2.

Row 11: K2, pm, (k2tog, yo) 3x, k1, (yo, ssk) 3x, pm, k2.

Cut yarn, leaving 8" tail, and draw through last stitch. Thread optional beads onto yarn with floss threader or big-eye bead needle. Make tassel (see below). Thread yarn end through top of tassel and back through beads. Weave end into bookmark. Press or block bookmark, applying starch if desired for stiffness.

Make Tassel:

Wind yarn 40 times around a piece of cardboard 2-1/2" wide. Pass an 8" length of yarn threaded on a tapestry needle under the yarn at one side of the cardboard and tie tightly. Cut the yarn at the other side. Cut another 8" length of yarn and wrap around the “head” of the tassel about 3/4" from the tied end. With tapestry needle, pass ends from both lengths of yarn to the middle. Trim all ends evenly.
